DEER ISLE GRANITE

We've teamed up with the Deer Isle Granite Company to offer a 20% discount on their entire selection of locally quarried granite gifts and kitchen accessories exclusively to guests of Goose Cove Lodge.

The distinctive beauty of granite from Deer Isle, Maine, is the result of its unique color and texture. These are determined by its feldspar content, expressed as large pink and white clusters, set off by hornblende, mica and quartz. Deer Isle graniteYou may recognize Deer Isle granite while visiting many of our most beautiful monuments and buildings across the nation, from the United Nations and Rockefeller Center in New York to the Security Trust & Savings Bank in Los Angeles. One of the more interesting applications is the so-called Rockefeller Bowl, the largest fountain bowl ever produced. It was made from a single piece of granite weighing over 200 tons and whose fabrication and transport to its home at the Rockefeller estate in Tarrytown, NY, was a monumental task in itself. Perhaps the most famous example of Deer Isle granite, however, is President John F. Kennedy's memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. Mrs. Kennedy's visit to the island to select the stone is still remembered.

The quarrying business began on Deer Isle around 1865 with the recognition of the granite's quality and accessibility to transportation. Over the years, many men gave their sweat and lives to this rugged way of life. So important was this industry to the island that the town of Green's Landing changed its name to Stonington, which remains one of the most picturesque villages on the coast of Maine. Today, Deer Isle granite is still used for a wide variety of construction and decorative purposes. Counter, desk and table tops comprise some of the more attractive uses. Now, Goose Cove Lodge and Deer Isle Granite Company are making this beautiful stone available as accessory items to be enjoyed for years to come in your home or office.
